Invincible Season 2, Episode 5 is a landmark entry in modern adult animation. It balances high-stakes cosmic horror with gritty, grounded tragedy, ensuring that the stakes have never felt higher. By elevating joke villains into genuine threats and refusing to shield its heroes with plot armor, the series proves once again why it is a masterclass in subverting the superhero genre.

Mark is NOT okay. The aftermath of Angstrom Levy’s attack is brutal — emotionally and physically. New threats emerge, old wounds fester, and that last shot? Absolute nightmare fuel. Invincible Season 2 - Episode 5

While Earth’s mightiest heroes are in space, a much more insidious threat emerges at home. The remixed Lizard League, supposedly C-list joke villains, attacks a military base housing nuclear missiles. This threat feels shockingly real and personal because it’s left to the "B-team": Rex Splode (Jason Mantzoukas), Dupli-Kate (Malese Jow), and Shrinking Rae (Grey Griffin). What follows is one of the most brutal sequences in the show’s history. The League’s new leadership (a storyline previously only hinted at) transforms them into a terrifyingly effective force. Komodo Dragon brutally dispatches Dupli-Kate, smashing her original body into one of her clones. He then simply swallows Shrinking Rae while she’s in her miniature form; she attempts to expand to escape, but Komodo crushes her from the inside, leading to a moment of grim finality. Rex manages to kill the Komodo Dragon, but loses a hand in the process and is left at the mercy of the Lizard King, who puts a gun to his head. The episode then cuts to black on a literal cliffhanger, leaving his fate unknown.

The space team consists of Mark, Immortal, Bulletproof, Black Samson, Monster Girl, Shapesmith, and Astronaut Rus Livingston (who is secretly the host for the Sequid mind).

In a heartbreaking sequence, Komodo Dragon systematically crushes and kills every single one of Kate’s clones, culminating in the apparent death of her "prime" body.

The episode asks hard questions about whether redemption is possible for someone like Omni-Man. Can Debbie ever truly move past the abuse?

These two sequences work in brilliant tandem. The space battle has the epic scope and scale of a summer blockbuster, while the Lizard League fight is a tight, terrifying, and claustrophobic horror show. Both underscore the immense peril of a world where its defenders are spread too thin.
