Born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1931 and raised in Chicago, McBride was an artistically gifted child. He studied painting under the legendary American illustrator Norman Rockwell before training at Syracuse University. In 1953, he arrived in Germany as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
